Inside a Minimalist Home Designed to be Open but Private

Welcome to the Elbow House, located along the Elbow River in Calgary. Named for both its geographic and architectural significance, the Elbow House features a distinctive design that integrates with its surroundings. The minimalist aesthetic, enhanced by natural materials like wood, brick, and stucco, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. The house’s two stacked volumes offer an open, panoramic view from the ground floor, while the upper level, clad in a wood screen, provides privacy for the bedrooms. The design integrates both the stereotomic (grounding) and tectonic (elevated) elements, ensuring a connection to the landscape and a sense of wonder. Inspired by the client’s vision of a T-shaped structure, the Elbow House captures light and creates dynamic spaces, offering a unique blend of simplicity and depth.
