If you’ve ever seen the Aurora Borealis - aka the Northern Lights – stretch its colourful blanket across the night skies, you’ll understand the fascination that drives Aurora Hunters to chase them tirelessly. The group of enthusiasts from St. Petersburg, Russia, led by young data analyst Natalya, venture out whenever there’s a chance to catch a sight of the aurora. They drive for hours with their cameras, sharing stories of their past escapades. Aurora Hunters insist it’s not just about taking incredible pictures but rather the thrill of the chase and the feeling of getting lucky.
Although predicting when the Aurora Borealis will be visible is challenging even for scientists, the hunters are pretty good at it by observing solar activity, wind speed, cloudiness etc. and keeping track of the best locations. Believing in sharing the world’s beauty, the Aurora Hunters created a website chock full of stats and data that’s become an indispensable tool for the hundreds of aurora enthusiasts.
