Nguyên Lê, Cường Vũ, Ngô Hồng Quang - Lý Cây Đa Hòa Âm: Nguyên Lê Paris By Night 115 - Asian Beauty / Nét Đẹp Á Đông NGUYEN LE Guitarist Nguyên Lê is a very particular jazz musician for a number of reasons: Even though he lives in Paris where he was born in 1959, he feels very connected to the cultural background of his Vietnamese family. He furthermore is self taught and just started to play the drums by the age of 15, but soon switched to the guitar. He entered the music business in 1983 playing with the Afro-Caribbean band “Ultramarin“. His impressive career really kicked off after joining the French “Orchestre National du Jazz” in 1987. Already his first solo albums – released at the beginning of the 90es – attracted a large and still growing audience. To this day, Lê released no less than 12 albums on ACT. He has played with almost every important and famous European or American jazz artist. He is a regular guest to WDR Big Band and has founded several bands and ensembles, whereof trio E_L_B (with Peter Erskine und Michel Benita) and Lê’s “Jimi Hendrix Project” are the most successful and well-known. CUONG VU Cuong Vu is widely recognized by jazz critics as a leader of a generation of innovative musicians. A truly unique musical voice, Cuong has lent his trumpet playing to a wide range of artists such as Pat Metheny, Laurie Anderson, and David Bowie. As a youngster, Cuong’s intense dedication and love for music led him to a full scholarship at the New England Conservatory of Music where he received his Bachelor of Music in Jazz studies with a distinction in performance. Transitioning from his studies in Boston, he moved to New York in 1994 and began his career actively leading various groups while touring extensively throughout the world. As a leader, Cuong has released eight recordings, each making critics’ lists of the 10 best recordings of their respective years and has received rave reviews from notable publications such as the New York Times, The New Yorker, Harper’s, the Guardian, BBC Music Magazine, JazzTimes and Downbeat. Cuong is currently associate professor and chair of Jazz Studies at the University of Washington and was awarded the University of Washington’s prestigious Distinguished Teacher Award in his third year on faculty. In 2002 and 2006, Cuong was a recipient of the Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album as a member of the Pat Metheny Group. He’s been recognized as one of the top 50 Jazz Artists in an article called “The New Masters” from the British magazine, “Classic CD” and in 2006 was named the Best International Jazz Artist by the Italian Jazz Critics’ Society. Amazon listed Vu’s “Come Play With Me” on their “The 100 Greatest Jazz Albums of All Time.” NGÔ HỒNG QUANG Ngô Hồng Quang is a Vietnamese traditional musician from Hanoi presently based in Den Haag, Holland. After being a teacher at Hanoi Conservatory of music for traditional music, he moved to the Netherlands to study composition at the Royal Academy of Music Netherlands in Den Haag. His multiple talents can be heard on vocals, including multiphonics & harmonic; Dan Nhi, two-string fiddle, Dan Bau or mono chord, a unique Vietnamese one-string instrument played with bent harmonics with a very vocal haunting sound, instruments from the ethnic minorities from Vietnam like Dan K’ny, fiddle with vocal resonator (like an acoustic vocoder); Dan Moi or Jews Harp (with which he delivers sounds that listeners could never imagine possible on such small & simple instrument). Modernity doesn’t replace tradition, but brings tradition to a new level of liveliness. Ngô Hồng Quang is working and performing between Vietnam and Europe.
