Professor Drake: How are you associated with the United Nations?
Sri Chinmoy: Well, as I said before I am a seeker. There I pray and meditate with the members of our Meditation Group, and we feel that there are two ways to serve God. One is the inner way; the other is the outer way. There the delegates, diplomats and politicians are trying to bring about peace in one way. And we feel that there is another way – to pray and meditate. They are not diametrically opposite ways. But only one helps the other. One strengthens the other. If I pray and meditate, then in my outer life I will be able to do something good for the entire humanity. So, they go together. If I have inside my mind or inside my heart a good thought then that good thought I will be able to offer to you. From within we come without.
Professor Drake: That’s beautifully, that’s beautifully put. Now, it’s almost – well, it’s quite a switch to turn to athletics for a second, but you are a very athletic man. And you say for example “Run, run.” Why, why you say this?
Sri Chinmoy: We feel the goal is not static. The goal is constantly going ahead. We are transcending. Today my goal will be to achieve a particular standard; tomorrow my goal will be totally different, means it will go beyond, beyond. Today I want to get a particular degree, say, Master’s degree or something. But tomorrow I will say that no, that is not enough. I must go farther beyond. Always the goal is ahead of us. Each individual in the beginning, he has a particular goal. Then when he reaches the goal, he laughs at it. He says, “No, this is the goal I wanted. This doesn’t satisfy me. I must go ahead. Then only perhaps I will be satisfied.” Then he reaches his second goal. There also he is not satisfied, for there is an inner urge to go beyond, to transcend his capacities. So, therefore, it is the continuous run. We are marching. We are running along Eternity’s Road. Otherwise, we will not derive any satisfaction from our life. It is like a river, continuously flowing. If it is a stagnant pool, we will not get joy. The river is flowing, flowing into the vast ocean.
