California is shaking! Night quake scares residents of the US and Mexico
An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 struck on Thursday off the coast of the Mexican state of Baja California, near the border with the United States.
The quake hit around 9:30 pm 16 miles from Ensenada and 60 miles from San Diego.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of about 9 miles below the seabed.
The National Weather Service said the quake would not trigger a tsunami.
In Ensenada, Tijuana, and Chula Vista, intensity levels ranged from four to five with mild to moderate shaking.
The earthquake caused a rock and earth landslide that blocked two lanes of the Ensenada-Tijuana highway.
No damage was reported in urban areas or injuries among residents.
Despite the small magnitude, the earthquake caused fear among the population in connection with the problem of the San Andreas Fault.
This continental transform fault is the most dangerous in the world.
It is known for producing strong and destructive earthquakes.
