Irish Pigeon Derby (1937)

Title reads: “Irish Pigeon Derby“. Dublin, Eire (Southern Ireland, Republic of Ireland). Irish Hospital Sweepstakes Pigeon Derby. Various shots of crates of pigeons being unloaded from ship in harbour. The crates are then driven through city on the back of a van. The crates of birds are laid out on the esplanade of King’s Bridge . M/S of women filming with cine-camera. Crowds of people watch the event. A person in fancy dress stands next to each crate, waiting to release the birds. Some of the men are even dressed as pigeons! The crates each have signs, showing the birds represent different areas (e.g. North Staffordshire Federation). Various shots of pigeons being released. M/S of Dublin’s Lord Mayor and Miss Martin receiving gifts of pigeon’s eggs from girl dressed in pigeon suit. Note: not sure who Miss Martin is - an Irish celebrity, a debutante perhaps?
