The 7th of January marks the liberation of Phnom Penh and the foundation of the People’s Republic of Kampuchea, the state that toppled the Khmer Rouge and rebuilt the country. However, the United States and its allies continued to support and recognise the Khmer Rouge while the Eastern Bloc gave much-needed support to the PRK. The PRK ultimately lasted 10 years before transitioning to the State of Cambodia.
