Community Dressing: Marken

‘Community Dressing’ is a documentary series about the Dutch National Costumes. As a researcher, I will look through the regional costumes to define the state of contemporary fashion consumption. By focusing on the almost disappeared Dutch costumes and its traditions, standards, values, creation and its passing, I hope to be able to offer a glance at the costumes compared to today’s fashion system. That’s why I’m going to interview experts, craftsmen and wearers to answer the following question; How has the current fashion system changed and / or stayed the same relative to costume dressing? The second episode is all about Marken’s regional dress. Formerly an island, Marken was known to flood a few times a year, leading it’s inhabitants to work on highly detailed forms of embroidery in their daily wear. Clothing pieces from Marken are far different from the rest of the Dutch National Costumes, making the inhabitants of Marken boldly unique and fiercely independent.
