The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.1, caught thousands of residents completely by surprise. Following the quake, the JMA promptly issued a tsunami warning for several areas in Kyushu and Shikoku. The warning indicated the possibility of tsunami waves reaching up to 1 meter in height, which caused widespread concern.
