Sakugawa no Kon Dai

This is a version of Sakugawa no Kon Dai as performed at the 1st Okinawa Karate World Tournament in 2018. This kata has been performed several times during the tournament, mostly by non-Okinawans. There were some raised eyebrows among onlookers and judges, as well as some consultations among the judges, but I can’t say what the reason was. Usually, Sakugawa no Kon Dai is a kata of Taira lineage bojutsu, but this is a completely different kata. There are many different kata and it is almost impossible to know them all in detail and this might explain the confusion. Personally, I don’t remember having seen it before, but my knowledge of the many Okinawan schools and techniques is limited so I am intrigued to get to know more about it’s history and lineage. Finally, it seems that this kata has also been included in the canon of kata allowed at this year’s oncoming tournament, which makes it kind if an official Okinawan tradition.
