Both Hurricane Maria and now Fiona have exposed veins of historical inequality that run deep through Puerto Rico.
This isn’t just another natural disaster, After empty promises to transition to a resilient renewable energy system, the government has only increased from 1% to 4% renewable sources. Not only are fossil fuel fed plants like Palo Seco and New Fortress unreliable – as we have seen over the last few days – but they are also polluting the air and sea, likely poisoning citizens leading to higher rates of cancer and respiratory problems. Worse yet, in some cases these plants are operating without proper permits and with sloppy and dangerous safety practices putting citizens at risk.
The organizers I spoke with expressed their need of support for their communities facing environmental injustice.
