March 14, 1519 Malinalli or Malinche or Marina is given to Cortez with other 19 women. Malinche becomes invaluable interpreter and mother of one of Cortés children. November 8, 1519: Motecuhzoma II or Moctezuma receives Hernán Cortés at the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan. November 14, 1519: Montezuma arrested and placed under guard by the Spanish. March 5, 1520: Governor Velazquez of Cuba sends Panfilo de Narvaez to rein in Cortés and regain control of the Spanish expedition. May, 28–29, 1520: Cortés defeats Narvaez at the Battle of Cempoala and adds his men and supplies to his own. May 20, 1520: Pedro de Alvarado orders the massacre of thousands of Aztec nobles at the Festival of Toxcatl. June 24, 1520 : Cortés returns to find Tenochtitlan in a state of uproar. June 29, 1520 : Motecuhzoma II is injured while pleading to his people for calm and dies the next day. June 30, 1520: ( La Noche Triste ) The Sad Night or the Night of Sorrows. Cortés and his men try to creep out of the city under cover of darkness but are discovered and attacked. Most of the treasure collected thus far is lost. July, 1520: Spaniards reach Tlaxcala to form an alliance and then again to begin assault of the Aztec empire. September 15: Cuitlahuac becomes the Tenth Huey Tlatoani of the Mexica people. October -Dec, 1520: Smallpox sweeps Tenochtitlan, claiming thousands of lives in Mexico, including Cuitlahuac.
