Dhapan’s personal yirdaki

This is Dhapan Yunupingu’s personal yirdaki which he cut himself on Elcho Island. According to Dhapan and his wife Sophia, this is the most famous yirdaki at Galiwin’ku, having been used in 10 dhapi’ (initiation) and 4 bapurru (funeral) ceremonies. The first part of the clip shows Dhapan doing his stuff, followed by short segments of Wangurri manikay and bunggul where the instrument was last used in ceremony. The occasion was Widi’s dhapi’, a ceremony where a young boy is made into a man.
