Using aggregate piers to improve ground conditions
Michels built 6,000 30-inch diameter aggregate piers to improve ground conditions and support construction of a large warehouse and distribution center in Matteson, IL. An 850,000-square-foot warehouse will be built on a 121-acre lot. Column loads for the 5-story facility will range from 520 kips to 2200 kips. The aggregate piers will improve load-bearing capacity to 8,000 pounds per square foot (PSF) with a differential settlement of less than a half-inch.
