Nel 1970 il Consiglio del Palio , presieduto dal Sindaco, conferisce all’. il prestigioso titolo di “Sbandieratori del Palio di Asti”. Il Gruppo, nato dal Palio, ne diventa il “biglietto da visita” ufficiale in Italia e nel mondo. Lo spettacolo che viene proposto si ricollega alla tradizione astigiana del gioco di bandiere nelle sue espressioni storico-sportive già citate in documenti ufficiali del 1275. I costumi sono fedeli riproduzioni medievali e le bandiere presentano i colori dei Borghi, Rioni e Comuni che corrono il Palio la terza domenica di settembre. Il Gruppo, composto da circa 80 atleti, tra musici (tamburini e trombettieri) e sbandieratori, offre una spettacolare varietà di esibizioni, occupando uno spazio temporale che può variare da 30 a 60 minuti. In oltre 40 anni di attività, numerosissime sono state le partecipazioni a importanti manifestazioni folcloristiche, storiche e a trasmissioni televisive in Italia e all’Estero. Dal 2012 il Gruppo ha fondato la sezione “Junior”, composta, tra sbandieratori e musici, da oltre 70 giovanissimi, dai 7 ai 16 anni: gli junior partecipano all’attività sociale con le trasferte del Gruppo e alle gare federali. L’. si è esibita in Francia, Spagna, Gran Bretagna, Germania, Svizzera, Austria, Ungheria, Repubblica Ceca, Bulgaria, Irlanda, Scozia, Svezia, Portogallo, Belgio, (New York, Miami, Atlanta), Giappone (Tokio, Kyoto, Osaka) ricevendo sempre il caloroso apprezzamento del pubblico e importanti riconoscimenti tra i quali, particolarmente ambito, il premio “Maschera d’argento” per i benemeriti del turismo L’impegno dell’. ha prodotto frutti importanti: infatti sulla scia dell’esperienza dell’. è nata una vera e propria «scuola astigiana» di sbandie­ratori che viene continuamente alimentata dai vari Rioni.
