SegWit vs Native SegWit: Understanding Different Types of Bitcoin Addresses
Currently, there are three Bitcoin addresses that exist in the market: Legacy, SegWit, and Native SegWit. In this video, we explain these different types of addresses, how they came to be, and what to pay attention to when making bitcoin transfers between them.
Too Long/ Didn’t watch Recap:
A Legacy address is the original style of the Bitcoin network. Legacy is not SegWit compatible, which means you cannot receive BTC from other address formats, including SegWit and native Segwit.
SegWit (Segregated Witness) can enable non-native segwit transactions. Users can transfer their BTCs from Legacy to SegWit address as a normal transfer.
Native SegWit is supported by major software and hardware wallets. However, it is only supported by a few exchanges. The transaction costs with a native SegWit are the cheapest.
