Tiruchi Siva, Rajya Sabha MP and Chairman, State-level Consultative Committee of Food Corporation of India (FCI), inspected a storage godown in Tuticorin on Thursday.
A 10-member committee, led by Mr. Siva, verified the stock position of foodgrains maintained in the godown here.
During the inspection, the Chairman interacted with the labourers. After inspection, he said that the committee would recommend to the Centre to find a suitable option to use pesticides without chemicals in these godowns stocking foodgrains. Nowadays, more farmers were interested in organic farming, he said.
A total of 57 godowns with a storage capacity of 10,50,000 tonnes of foodgrains were functioning across India. Among them, 14 were under the control of the FCI and the rest were Central warehousing godowns. Out of the 14 FCI godowns, those in Tuticorin and Ramanathapuram had own buildings, he said.
