Carlos Kleiber Beethoven: Symphonies Nos.5

Recording of the Vienna Philharmonic of the Symphony No. 5 (Beethoven) IV Allegro in Juarez Mejico 1986 The image is bad but seeing Klieber performing makes up for it Carlos Kleiber (1930-2004) was a singular director, tremendously self-demanding, rigorous and almost certainly stigmatized by a complex personality. Kleiber was a managerial magician who seemed to live in direct communion with the very spirit of music. His way of directing and rehearsing never attended to reasons, techniques, or any logistics. He let himself be inspired by music and that was only enough for the musicians to follow his orders through the movement of his eyes rather than that of his hands. His ability to perform the orchestral accelerandi was prodigious and the transitions between the tempi were perfectly fine.
