Peru’s president, Pedro Castillo, announced on Thursday an environmental emergency following the oil spill that has already affected 21 beaches on the Pacific coast.
Castillo made the statements during his visit to Cavero beach, one of the most affected areas in Ventanilla, where he said he expected the Repsol-run refinery to assume responsibility in the ecological disaster.
“The oil spill that occurred a few days ago has been the most worrying ecological disaster on the Peruvian coast in recent times,“ said Castillo.
The images show the clean-up operation of the Peruvian coastline affected by the oil spill, as well as volunteers collecting birds covered in oil or dead.
The president later announced on his Twitter account that the state would take sanctions against those responsible for the ’ecocide.’
