DELPHI GREECE: The Oracle - Center of the WORLD for ANCIENT GREECE
Delphi Greece - Discover the Oracle of Delphi!
It’s a dream come true to be able to visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site, so incredibly significant to the world of Ancient Greece.
Delphi was considered the center of the world in ancient Greek religion and mythology. It was the site of the Oracle of Delphi, a sanctuary dedicated to the god Apollo, where priestesses, known as the Pythia, would deliver prophecies and advice to seekers from across the ancient Greek world. Delphi was not only a place of religious worship but also a hub of cultural, political, and athletic activities.
The Oracle of Delphi was established around the 8th century BCE, and it soon gained fame for its prophecies. The Pythia would enter a trance-like state, offering cryptic and highly regarded advice to those who sought her wisdom.
In the 4th century BCE, King Philip II of Macedon and his son Alexander the Great consulted the Oracle before embarking on their conquests. The Oracle’s blessing was seen as a divine endorsement of their endeavors.
Delphi’s influence waned during the Roman era, as the spread of Christianity led to the decline of traditional pagan practices. The sanctuary was eventually closed by Emperor Theodosius I in the late 4th century CE.
Delphi also hosted athletic competitions known as the Delphic Games, which were similar to the Olympic Games but with a strong religious component. These games featured events like chariot racing, music, and poetry competitions.
When visiting the Delphi Archeological Site, do not miss the archeological museum which is included in the admission price.
