Welcome to this EMDR basic introductory session.
If you are someone who has experienced trauma, strong negative thoughts and emotions or other PTSD symptoms, then EMDR is a therapy that you MUST try. To understand EMDR in a very simple way, during traumatic events, your brain stores traumatic memories in an unhealthy or maladaptive way. Trauma is like a wound that hasn’t healed and because of that, your brain hasn’t received the message that the danger is over. EMDR helps you to reprocess trauma in a healthy way.
Disclaimer, this little video just goes into the basics. It’s not a full EMDR session with all of the components. It’s just a taster! It’s certainly not a replacement for proper therapy with a qualified therapist. There are many reasons for this, including your ability to see things from a different, unbiased perspective and ensuring the entire memory has been processed sufficiently by doing the correct tests. However, I hope this video will help you relieve some stress and help you to reframe the memory and associated feelings enough to get you through to your actual EMDR session.
If this is your first time doing this, start by focusing on a small or minor trauma. Something that just irritates you a little bit, but isn’t too overwhelming. Then, bring that image to mind and notice where you feel the feelings in your body.
In a moment, you can follow the ball whilst focusing on memory and sensations, and allow your brain to process it.
Some people feel the feelings getting less intense the more they focus on the ball; other people see other memories or have insights that allow them to heal in other ways. There’s no right or wrong way. Just focus with the intention to heal and allow it and we’ll rest shortly. So just holding that memory in your mind and focus on the ball now.
