Galloping full speed ahead towards summer (just don’t forget to arm yourself with SPF) ☀️ 🎶
In this #CQMinute, enjoy a bit of drama from our Arms and Armor galleries.
Listen and watch as @catalystquartet—our @metlivearts 2022-23 Quartet in Residence—performs a piece by composer and violist Nick Revel (@revelnick), who was chosen for this commission through a national competition judged completely blind.
Nick writes about the work: “This piece was whittled down from a cloud of many ideas and sketches that came to me unusually quickly and easily during this time of inspiration.
The challenge was to unify the remaining ideas in the first and second halves, which I attempted through rhythmic displacement and accents that imply poly-meter time feels. The piece’s basic instructions are easily adaptable to many musical interpretations, styles, and moods.”
What’s #CQMinute? In commemoration of their 10th anniversary, Catalyst Quartet has commissioned a series of miniature string quartets from 11 composers, ranging from Pulitzer winners to jazz legends to indie-pop stars—all performed in the Museum’s galleries and released right here on The Met’s YouTube and Instagram. Stay tuned for more—Catalyst Quartet will be back for another year of residency next year.
