Mac Wilkins Explains the Wide Right Leg Discus Throw Technique
Mac Wilkins Explains The Wide Right Leg
The high and wide right leg, leading with the inside of the thigh, having the the right foot pull you through the throw. In this style of the throwing it can be hard understand what this all really means.
While I can’t claim to perfectly understand or do this with skill unmatched, I have come to some understanding about this.
If you’ve ever played basketball you know that the moment you stop dribbling you can pivot on just one foot, back and forth. During this time you try to keep the ball away from the defender. If your back is to the basket you can’t lead with the ball to turn into a position to shoot. Instead you must lead with the lower body first.
This is same movement in the back of the ring. The first sub movement is the turn of the low left heel and squatting with the hips into the 9 o’clock drop position. The shoulders stay over the knees and torqued back. The right knee maintains its spacial relationship with the left knee. The right foot does not turn instead swinging wide around the left foot pivot into the center of the ring.
By maintaining the same distance of the knees apart when in the position when the feet are both pointed out about 30° like a squat, the right foot is picked up early. If the shoulders are held back in ‘X’ the lower body will lead the throw.
If done as well as Wolfgang, it is as if the thrower is spun around by someone else and not his own movement.
