Species Spotlight | Penguin Tetra

Aquatics expert Tom Sarac provides an in-depth overview of one of the old-time favorite aquarium fish - the Penguin Tetra! Native to the upper Amazon River basin in Peru and the Araguaia River in Brazil, the Penguin Tetra (Thayeria boehlkei) is easy to care for, has a highly unique appearance, and shoals very nicely! A hardy and undemanding species, the Penguin Tetra prefers to be kept in larger groups of its own kind, and is compatible with other peaceful species such as Corydoras, Hemigrammus, Rasbora and Trichogaster. Well-suited for both planted aquascapes and more natural layouts with driftwood roots and branches, lead litter and stained water, the Penguin Tetra exhibits schooling behaviors more than most other tropical freshwater fish, adding a fascinating visual element to any suitable aquarium!
