By 1943 things were beginning to look extremely shaky for Adolf Hitler and the German Reich. The invasion of the Soviet Union 2 years prior had brought immediate rapid success. The Red Army was smashed but not defeated, however there was reason to be positive despite the setback at years end. 1942 offered a second chance yet this, too, was squandered. Over-ambition led to a thinly held front with a shaky supply line. Stalingrad was encircled and obliterated and a hasty retreat took place. 1943 was essentially the last chance. The Eastern Front was slipping through Germany’s fingers and they had to hold on for dear life. Hitler was even admitting that the war could no longer be won by outright conquest. Things immediately got worse. Africa fell and Italy’s defection became an open secret. But how was Germany supposed to juggle the Eastern front and now inherit Italy’s responsibilities, too?
