Samuel Prather & Groove Orchestra - ’A Different Kind of Funk’

CapitalBop’s Spotlight Residency // February 28, 2020 When it comes to songwriting, Samuel Prather shoots from the hip, and that’s never been more true than with his song ’A Different Kind of Funk’ — a frank statement on the realities of existing as a person of color in our current moment: “If you’re Black or brown, tryin’ to hold it down / Living under Trump, I’m telling you / Life demands a different kind of funk.“ We thought pulling this song from the archives — from our last show, in fact, before the pandemic struck — was appropriate on Inauguration Day, as we watch Trump depart from our city. Beyond its tongue-and-cheek political commentary, the song has that distinctly Sam Prather energy: every bit buzzing with the magic of Black popular music past and present, from Charles Wilson’s funky breaks to screaming trumpet solos from Baltimore firebrand Brandon Woody. // Jamie Sandel, CapitalBop MORE SPOTLIGHT RESIDENCY VIDEOS: https://www.
