Salvador Brotons, “Melancolic“ from Partita dels Temperaments
Partita dels Temperaments was written by Barcelona composer Salvador Brotons in 2001 for Gabriel Estrellas. The subject of the composition is the classic four temperaments of Greek philosophy, specifically Hypocrates’s Typology of the Four Humors or Temperaments. This is the third movement, “Melancolic,“ which, according to the composer, “is the most anxious and desperate temperament. The sweet melody in the high register is evocative and it is presented in a rubato tempo. The central part is more dramatic and intense to return to the initial melody.“ It seems a fitting anthem for these desperate and anxious times.
