Mount Etna Volcano Update; 2,000 Foot High Lava Fountains, Flights Cancelled
The Mount Etna volcano just produced its first major eruption of 2024, with this occurring on July 4th and 5th. Over the span of several hours, towering lava fountains were created, sending lava fountains up to a height of 2000 feet into the air. This paroxysm occurred alongside heavy ash emissions, causing ash and lapilli to rain down on the city of Catania and causing 90 flights to be cancelled. While this paroxysm is now over, additional and potentially larger explosions and lava fountains could occur in the next several days to weeks.
