Snorkeler killed by windsurfing board in fatal accident off Canary Islands - TomoNews

LAS PALMAS, SPAIN — A fatal accident occurred close to the shore of Spain’s Gran Canaria Island, when a windsurfer struck a woman snorkeling in the water on Monday. A 31-year-old Russian woman named Emilia was snorkeling with her Spanish boyfriend in one meter of water. The couple appear to have drifted from a snorkeling and swimming area into a designated windsurfing and boating area. They were also snorkeling without a buoy, which is required to warn of their presence below the water. Reports are vague, but a 41-year-old windsurfer, either from Sweden or Switzerland, passed over the woman, striking her in the neck with his board’s skeg. Or else, she may have been sitting upright in the shallow water, when the windsurfer made a steep turn, slashing her throat with the skeg. The skeg is the blade on the bottom of the windsurfing board which gives it stability. The impact nearly severed the woman’s head, killing her instantly. Police are treating her death as an accident, and not charging the windsurfer. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
