New fragments of Dead Sea Scrolls found in Israeli cave
Israeli archaeologists have discovered a trove of artifacts in a cave in Israel that includes new fragments of the renowned Dead Sea Scrolls.
The shards of text were found during a survey of an 80 km strip of cliffside desert caves, along with other items, including the 6,000-year-old partially mummified skeleton of a child.
It is the first time a discovery of this kind has been made in this area in 60 years, following the discovery of the ancient Jewish texts known as the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947.
The collection, which has come to include texts discovered elsewhere in the Judean dessert along the Dead Sea’s western shore, provide insight into Jewish society and religion dating back to the 3rd century B.C. and 1st century A.D.
