Little Rock Nine

On this day in 1957, the Little Rock Nine, a group of nine African American students, enrolled in Little Rock Central High School. Here is a British Movietone report showing riots and arrests outside the high school. Little Rock, Arkansas, the white population are determined to prevent coloured students from going to the school their own children attend. A near riot developed and police made a number of arrests among the ring-leaders of the white pickets. Later, the Central High School was sealed off, by orders of the Governor, who called out the State National Guard. President Eisenhower then sent five hundred troops to Little Rock to keep law and Orval Faubus seen descending from aircraft. Colour bar trouble in Little Rock. Police making arrests.
