This silent Canadian travelogue was made by Norman Schley, a filmmaker from Waukesha, Wisconsin whose company Picturelogue, Inc. produced a variety of travel films, some of which aired on television. In other cases, the films were designed to be shown to a live audience, with Norm narrating them live. (:32). The Champlain statue; in Quebec City, opens the film, sculpted in 1898 by Paul Chevre (1:14). A white yacht and steamer float in Quebec City’s old port (1:21). The cannons at Montmorency Park follow (1:29). The Quebec City Fortification Wall (1:34) is a wall surrounding the western end of Quebec’s Upper Town dating back to the 17th century. An armed guard walks through the Quebec Citadel Dalhousie gate entrance (1:48). The Citadel is a British colonial fort built in 1820. The Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac built in 1890 (2:03). Quaint shops (2:12) and hotels such as the Maison Montcalm (2:18). A trolley of the Gray Line bends down the road (2:40). Small children window shop and peek at handcrafted wooden figures (3:00). Hotel Louis XIV follows (3:14) with the bust of King Louis XIV (3:26). Boys prepare their pups for dog cart rides (3:55). Waters of Montmorency Falls pour down rock slab (4:27). Small farm homes dot the land around Montmorency River (4:52). A cart loaded with hay (4:58). An open market filled with hand woven rugs (5:01). A woman works a hand loom (5:29). A fresh bread loaf pulled from an outdoor stone oven (6:15). Old City Hall at Queen Street West in Toronto (7:04). The city streets are crammed with city walkers (7:13). Toronto’s Inner Harbor (7:50). The tour moves to North Bay (8:45) with tourists arriving at McKee’s Camp known for fishing and hunting (8:53). A fisherman (9:04). The group takes a boat out to fish (12:13). A seaplane arrives (14:21). A bird’s eye view follows (14:36). Log cabins squat alongside the water (15:11). The young boy struggles with a fish (16:50). The seaplane is captured again (17:08) as they take off for the next location. Aerial shots of lakes and other bodies of water nestled in the lush landscape follow (17:26). Winnipeg is next (18:08). Expanses viewed from the train (18:23) as it approaches the industrial area (18:32). Aerial shots of the city (18:53). Canadian National Railway was established in 1919 (18:56) as one of it’s main stations is shown. Other businesses include Eaton’s of Canada (19:06). Ceramic plate ware and figurines are set up window shop displays (19:14). Hudson’s Bay Company building appears at (19:25). A woman within the store looks at heavy blankets (20:09) and a thick jacket for the young boy (20:33). The Winnipeg Auditorium; built in the 1930’s was used to host concerts, art and conventions (20:43). The Manitoba Legislative building stands in central Winnipeg (20:48). The Golden Boy statue is zoomed in on top of the building (20:54). Polo Park Racetrack is pictured (21:33). Horse and rider move out to track (21:37). Horse and jockey ready themselves for press photographs and the winner’s circle (23:02). A bright and colorful fair follows (23:14). The University of Manitoba; founded in 1877 (23:40). Tourists head for a rowing match (24:34). A newspaper boy delivers papers near the Canadian Army Recruiting center (24:50). Farmers test McCormick farm machinery (25:20). A stagecoach (26:08) filled with guests costumed in colonial attire (26:29). Tractors are tested (27:39). The film turns to Sutherland with the Sutherland Forest Nursery Station (29:25) designed by the Canada Department of Agriculture. A large oil factory is seen in Edmonton (30:58). Machinery digs for oil in a well (31:44). Alberta Government Telephones was the main provider for much of Alberta from the early 1900’s to 1991 (32:42). The Alberta Legislative building (32:52), and the University of Alberta (32:59). Dead automobiles sit outside the Premier Steel Mill (33:06). Westmount Centre was a popular shopping destination (34:49). Edmonton Lawn Bowling Club (35:08). Clowns take to the streets to help clean the city (36:54). The Edmonton Shrine Club marches (37:13) in the Ponoka Stampede (38:11). Cars decorated with flowers (38:17). Guests buy tickets for the merry-go round (38:50). A boy stands with a large elephant (38:58). Bronco riders spill into the ar ena (40:02). Cowboy’s attempt to lasso cattle (40:50). A marching band (42:00).
