First Christmas carol in this year’s musical Advent calendar! In 1849, Edmund Sears, pastor of the Unitarian Church in Wayland, Massachusetts, wrote a poem that would become one of the most famous Christmas carols. In 1890, the lyrics were set in music by American composer Richard Storrs Willis. In Commonwealth countries the melody is different, having been later adapted by Arthur Sullivan.
