Charley’s first mud bath!
What a sight to behold 😍 – today Charley took one more step closer towards a species-appropriate life fit for an elephant! 🐘
🎉Today was another BIG day for the widely beloved, and now world-famous elephant Charley, as we saw him moving from the safety of his boma into a larger enclosure and even having a little mud bath. Everyone present held their breath as the elephant that up until recently resided in sadness and solitude in a South African zoo, stepped into his new environment.
If only Charley knew that this was only a taste of what’s to come…
Today’s move into the first enclosure was a big step but many more exciting phases are planned. After an adaption and integration period Charley will again be released into an even bigger enclosure 🌳 where he will have space to roam and get to live in the natural environment of Shambala!
FOUR PAWS, in partnership with the EMS Foundation and Shambala Private Reserve worked closely behind the scenes to ensure the best retirement plan for the African bull who is more than 40 years old.
FOUR PAWS is supporting the rehabilitation efforts within the Shambala Reserve, promoting Charley’s natural behaviours and social bonds💙 This will help prepare him for his further releases at Shambala ensuring he is able to live independently in the nature reserve. Charley might choose to live separately from the other elephants or integrate with them – the choice is his!
➡️Stay tuned for more exciting Charley updates!
