Permian Basin Fossil Record from Amazing Gem and Mineral Museum
The West Texas oil fields are the result of the filling in of sediments of the Permian Basin, and ancient inland sea that existed there during the Carboniferous Period. In a road cut along a stretch of highway outside of Jacksboro Texas we found the full history of the Permian Basin within a 15 feet high outcrop of sandstone that is actually the fossil record of this amazing formation. We have these fossils on display in the Amazing Gem and Mineral Museum here in Helotes Texas, just west of San Antonio.
