Based on the novel of the same name by David Seals, Powwow Highway presents a classic comedy-road movie with a unique Native American twist.
Buddy Red Bow, a member of a Northern Cheyenne tribe in Montana, is battling greedy developers in order to save his reservation.
When he learns that his estranged sister, Bonnie Red Bow, has been arrested and thrown into a Sante Fe jail, he sets out to free her.
Enlisting the help of a quirky free spirit named Philbert Bono, they drive his ‘war pony’ (a rusty 1964 Buick Wildcat) all the way to Santa Fe whilst trying to keep their clashing attitudes towards life from jeopardising the trip. What follows is an intriguing and entertaining comedy that has been cherished by the Native American community since its release in 1989, winning multiple awards and being screened at various film festivals.
