Соч.134: Соната для скрипки и фортепиано (Эми Ле-Мар - скрипка)
12/09/2023
Milton Court Concert Hall
Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) composed his Violin Sonata in 1968 to celebrate the 60th birthday of violinist David Oistrakh, with whom he had a close professional relationship. He was living in Moscow at the time and dealing with worsening health issues. Although the new Soviet Union’s leadership of Leonid Brezhnev meant a degree of cultural relaxation compared to the Stalin era, there were still censorship and political pressures on artists which Shostakovich had dealt with throughout his career. These elements may have influenced the character of the piece, which is marked by its introspective and emotionally charged nature.
