I started working on the song “No Escape” back in March as a response to the COVID-19 outbreak and it is surreal to be finally releasing the lyric video for it in October. On September 8th, just as I was completing the part about climate change, winds pushed heavy wildfire smoke into my town in Oregon without any warning. Emergency alerts about fires and evacuations began immediately. The days turned into something out of the movie “The Road.“ Ash began raining down and it became much cooler. The heatwave never happened because smoke blanketed the sun. It stayed that way for more than a week, the air quality being too hazardous to even go outside. Nothing moved until rain finally cleared the air. Never before have I seen climate change up close and personal until now. Well, not entirely true. In 2017 and 2018, wildfire smoke from California also blanketed the skies. The experience in 2020 was much worse. Many people have lost their homes and fires are still burning around the state. I am donating all of the proceeds from the “No Escape“ single to the Red Cross to support the wildfire relief in Oregon. I’ve started the project here in 2002 and never seen it this bad. The gas mask I wore back then only now makes sense. Climate change is real. We need action now.
