Visit Visit our website Dating to the late 1960s/early 1970s, this promotional film was made by New Dimension Films, Inc., a firm that specialized in animated films and special effects. The company applied for a patent in 1967 for a “method and apparatus for producing animated drawings and in-between drawings“ that used an “electronic graphics and display technology to assist the animator with drawing, editing, and coloring.“ This film may (or may not) show that system in use. The demo reel does show a form of advanced multi-plane animation, which the narration refers to as “3-D animation.“ Some of the examples shown include animated characters interacting with 3-D objects in an industrial film (2:20) and a highly detailed set (2:50). At (3:06) a Fresca soda commercial is shown wherein an animated character climbs into the soda bottle. At (3:34) an animated character on a motorcycle drives towards what appears to be a real hand grenade, while the background elements are animation. At (5:30) the narrated demo concludes, and several samples from recent work are shown. It’s unclear how much work New Dimension contributed during its operation, or whether the animation company is related to a company of the same name that produced non-fiction (but not animated) films in the 1980s.
