“Freedom Fighter“ is emblematic, lyric-wise, of much of the reggae of that late 80s that focused on ending the apartheid system in South Africa. This performance, with a great lead vocal from Don Carlos, took place at Bay Street, Sag Harbor, NY, on March 17, 1990. The audience participation on this particular song is uplifting to sing along with something meaningful.
Every incarnation of Black Uhuru has its place and time. This trio: Duckie Simpson, Don Carlos and Garth Dennis, provided the link to the group’s origins, that moved their music forward into the 90s.
Give thanks to the Step Lively crew, to Preston Powell of Bay Street, and to the appreciative audience that turned out for this show.
This video is dedicated to the memory of Frederick Douglass, America’s freedom fighter, who celebrated his birthday, and not Valentine’s Day, on February14th.
