Dianne Durham Gymnastics Tribute (1968 - 2021)

Dianne Durham was an American gymnastics athlete, the first Black woman to win the US national gymnastics championships in 1983. Having previously won the 1981 & 1982 junior US championships, once she became a senior gymnast in 1983, Dianne Durham made history by becoming the first Black all-around national US gymnastics champion. At the 1983 US nationals, Dianne also brought home the gold medals on vault, beam and floor and the silver medal on uneven bars. Her most important gymnastics results are: 1981 Junior US national gymnastics champion 1982 Junior US national gymnastics champion 1983 US national gymnastics championships: 4 gold - all-around, vault, beam, floor; 1 silver - uneven bars At the 1984 US Olympic trials, Durham injured her ankle on her Tsukahara 1/1 vault, and she had to withdraw. Since she hadn’t attended the 1983 world championships, she wasn’t eligible to compete at the 1984 Olympic Games, so she retired from gymnastics competition. Later, she became a gymnastics coach helping other girls do the sport she loved. Dianne Durham died in 2021.
