American cataloguer’s note: British lawyer and Conservative MP Frederick Edwin Smith, 1st Earl of Birkenhead. Lord Birkenhead had held posts of Attorney General, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for India, and was also known for his legal reform work. His son, Frederick Winston Furneaux Smith, became the 2nd Earl and wrote biography of his father.
