1948 HITS ARCHIVE: Woody Woodpecker - Kay Kyser (Gloria Wood & Harry Babbitt, vocal) (a #1 record)

Woody Wood-Pecker (Tibbles-Idriss) by Kay Kyser & his Orchestra, vocal by Gloria Wood (with Harry Babbitt) Like Mickey Mouse before him, and Tweety & Sylvester after, animated movie star Woody Woodpecker was immortalized in popular song. Kyser’s recording spent six weeks atop the national sales listings and featured on vocal both Gloria Wood and (an unbilled) Harry Babbitt. The Walter Lantz character was also given a Mel Blanc treatment in the popular Sportsmen version of the song for Capitol and a Danny Kaye-Andrews Sisters release on Decca. Other Kyser hits included in the 1948 collection are “Serenade Of The Bells” and the final hit for the band, “On A Slow Boat To China.” THE 1948 HITS ARCHIVE - here in one place, a good-quality library of original-release-version best-sellers and songs that made an impact that were either released or enjoyed a major chunk of their popularity within the calendar year 1948 (some were recorded in 1947).
