Lenny Breau with the Bob Erlendson Quartet: Live at The Towers, Winnipeg 1964
When the group ’three’ disbanded in Toronto in late 1963, Lenny Breau returned to Winnipeg desperately in need of musical employment. Fortunately, there was plenty of work to be found, both at CBC TV and Radio and in various clubs around town.
Bob Erlendson had a steady gig at the Towers Supper Club with a quartet featuring various trumpeters that the club’s owner, Aubrey Galprin, was not happy with and all ended up being fired. When Lenny returned to Winnipeg, Bob talked Galprin into allowing Lenny to replace the last of these unfortunate trumpeters.
The quartet featured Bob on piano, Wayne Finnucan on drums, Dave Shaw on bass and valve trombone and Lenny on guitar and occasionally electric bass.
Bob Erlendson recalls that this recording (made in August of 1964) is of “an unfortunately hungover afternoon and night time of the same day... and Lenny is marvellous on it“.
Many thanks to Wayne Finnucan for allowing us to present this excellent recording in the Lenny Breau Archives.
