Lenny Breau Meets Ted Greene- Part Two: Lenny & Ted Jam, Trade Tunes and Share Ideas: October 1979
In October of 1979, Lenny Breau and his girlfriend Sinde Shubert arrived at the Los Angeles airport where they were met by saxophonist Scott Page who had invited Lenny to stay at his home until he was settled in the city. Scott brought along his friend Ted Greene and Ted’s partner Barbara. Ted was an enormous fan of Lenny’s and had long been looking forward to meeting him.
After arriving at Scott’s house that afternoon, Lenny and Ted spent several hours jamming, showing each other arrangements of tunes and discussing techniques and other subjects. Scott Page recorded the entire ten hour session which we are presenting in edited form in three parts.
Part Two of this meeting begins with an excerpt from a 2001 telephone interview with Ted Greene in which he comments about what it was like to play and hang out with Lenny.
Lenny and Ted jam on the standard ’Emily’ after expressing their admiration for each other. Lenny chats about his children and legal problems in Canada and then discusses the chords he uses in ’Why Did I Choose You’ before playing the tune for Ted.
After Ted and Lenny chat about Ed Bickert, Ted plays his solo guitar version of ’Surrey with a Fringe On Top’. Lenny then plays ’Spartacus’ and ’Hi Lily Hi Lo’ for Ted. Afterwords Lenny discusses the development of his slurring techniques and their use in Flamenco and Jazz.
Ted then shows Lenny his harmonization of the Japanese pentatonic scale and Lenny reciprocates by demonstrating his harmonization of the Hungarian scale.
