Wouter de Nooy - Words and Networks (NetGloW 2014)

Wouter de Nooy’s study (University of Amsterdam Netherlands) aimed at linking semantic network research with local network structures. In his speech, de Nooy demonstrated how models for local network structure research, that take into consideration attributes of people and characteristics of their network neighborhood, can help predict what people do and think. Hence, the analysis of network along multiple dimensions of human behaviour - namely language use and social interactions - help understand the evolution of socio-technical network and information. Though semantic research has been also developed in many ways, is it not clear yet whether it is possible and fruitful to apply statistical models for local network structure to semantic networks. Research aims at bridging the gap between theories related to language use and network theories, linking those methods and tools developed to utilizing text data for network analysis.
