DANGEROUS CUBAN PRO BOXER - DAVID MORRELL JR

Welcome, guys, thanks for joining me again in this update. I hope you’re all well. So, guys this fight involving David Morrell Jr and Lennox Allen was a 12-round Interim WBA Championship Fight. This fight took place in Los Angeles USA and was David’s first true test in the Pros against another undefeated but more experienced opponent. He got the win but what is slightly more important and is my focus in the video is the fact that I believe David represents the new age Cuban boxer. Now David Morrell Jr, like many Cuban boxers, has an interesting story. He was born and raised in Cuba, and as a boxer, this means that you are training under the national Cuban School of Boxing system. Intense specific footwork drill and shadowboxing. This system is a highly proficient and regimented system that is uniquely the World’s best amateur training system for amateur boxing at the highest level so the World Championships and the Olympic games. Yes guys, better than the US and UK training systems. Now before you guys get into a strop - I suggest you go and look at the medal tables for the World Championships and Olympic Games from 1968 till today. Thats when Cuba joined amateur boxing. Now with Morrell, as an amateur, was able to win The Youth World Championships and the Cuban National Championships in 2016 and 2017 respectively. He has a record of 130 wins and only 2 losses. One of his losses was to two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Julio Cesar La Cruz, and it was by no means a one-sided affair. So as you can see in these clips David had a similar sense of showboating and style in the amateurs to that which you can see him perform with today as a Pro. Now Morrell defected to Mexico in 2017 and began his Pro career in the US in 2019. Now, David Morrell Jr. is particularly different from most other Cuban boxers because most boxers before could only defect under the strict Cuban Communist regime if they were able to do so during major international competitions like the Olympic games or World Championships. So we’re talking about boxers that remain as amateurs longer than they would want; so therefore boxers that are older and more conditioned to the 3 rounds of amateur boxing. In addition to this, to avoid the suspicion of possible defection, they would begin the transition phase to the Pros only once they have defected. Also once they leave Cuba and embark on this journey to box in a foreign country, they do so without their family. This is why Pro boxing has not really seen the talent of Cuban boxing other than the Cuban Olympians, which is less than 1% of all Cuban boxers and consequently this is why most people believe that all Cubans box in a fleet footed style. In Cuba, you can find boxers that fight with the same Cuban technique but in a more aggressive US or Mexican style. The important caveat is the presence of the Cuban technique These boxers would naturally take well to the challenges of Pro boxing. Despite the successes of older Cuban Olympians in the Pros I would still say that they fought with many of the disadvantages that David has been able to avoid. So, he still carries an incredible amateur pedigree at the national level from the World elite Cuban School of Boxing system. However, he doesn’t have the same mileage as his native Olympians, he did not start his pro transition late, and rather than being older with a conditioned amateur style... he is a young fighter who has a great, aggressive yet technical style for the Pros. He’s currently in the Light Heavyweight division, where his opponents are boxers such as Beterbiev, Bivol, and Benavidez. This is an interesting division to look out for, and this young Cuban maestro is definitely one to watch.
