Æthiopian Architecture; Lost Dry Stone Fortresses of Africa - Great Zimbabwe [Oldest Photographs]
Howdy ya’ll. Today we will dive into a topic which I have seldom heard discussed before, yet this miraculous architecture would go on to reshape the history of the African Continent. Great Zimbabwe is a legendary fortification in the heart of the country of the same name. Great Zimbabwe is not only the largest pre-colonization fort in Africa, but it is also built entirely using the Dry Stone method, meaning each stone was meticulously placed and set without the use of any mortar or adhesive.
Further diving into the history of Great Zimbabwe will indicate it has, for centuries, been a location of much struggle and debate. With legends that tie Great Zimbabwe to King Solomon, The Queen of Sheba, and even Prester John, the history is ripe for our attention. For many years, for example, the history of Great Zimbabwe was purportedly mislabeled by Rhodesian scholars under orders of the ruling power.
It was only with the independence of Zimbabwe in the year 1980 that the true history, and mystery, of Great Zimbabwe has begun to come to the limelight. Today we will try to figure out the complicated narrative, while entertaining theories, and looking at the first photographs ever taken of Great Zimbabwe from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Enjoy!
