Alex Puccio talks you through the secrets of Toe Hooking

Toe Hooking is such an important technique for climbing - especially on steeper ground and navigating aretes. Whether you are replacing a limb for a limb (hand for a toe) or kicking in a toe hook, they provide added security in a longer anchor point allowing you to leverage off the toe and gain reach. As you progress and use toe hooks more often, you’ll gain the confidence and ability in placing toe hooks on bent legs, but this is far harder and trying to ensure a straight leg initially, with a 90 degree ankle bend (or more!) is crucial at first. Making sure you use as much toe as possible is also key as the further down the foot you go, the added pressure you get and then harder the hook will be. Leaving space is also important and one of the most common errors we see when people try and fail to toe hook properly. As many of you wanted more training tips on the last video on heel hooking, we’ve added a section on training methods too. We hope you enjoy.
