Egyptian opposition politician Ahmed Tantawi talks about election plans

Ahmed Tantawi, an Egyptian opposition politician and the most notable candidate expressing an intention to run in Egypt’s presidential election, criticised Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in an interview with the news outlet al-Manassah, calling him “the worst leader” in Egypt’s modern history. Tantawi criticised the current government’s selling of profitable state assets and companies, considering the country’s deepening economic crisis, which has seen the currency lose half its value against the dollar. He stated that he would separate the economy of sovereign bodies from the private sector and expressed his desire to reach an agreement with debtor countries to schedule or cancel some of Egypt’s debts. He also mentioned holding an economic conference for nations friendly to Egypt that wish to cooperate on profitable projects. Egypt announced that it will hold a presidential election on 10-12 December, after originally being due to take place in 2024, with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi widely expected to win a third term. The winner is expected to be announced on 18 December Subscribe to our channel: Middle East Eye Website: Follow us on TikTok: @middleeasteye Follow us on Instagram: Like us on Facebook: Follow us on Twitter:
